Blogger Tutorial / Lesson 2: Setting Up Your Blog Correctly

After creating a Blogger blog, the first job is configuring the settings correctly. Title, description, language, privacy and search visibility — these tell Google how to read your blog.

2026 note: Originally published in 2014. Blogger’s UI has been refreshed since, but the Settings logic is largely the same. The list below captures what still applies in 2026 plus a few new bits.

Settings Checklist

  1. Blog title: shows up in Google. Short and topical.
  2. Description: ~150 chars summarizing what you write about.
  3. Blog language: drives date and locale formats.
  4. Search preferences > Meta description: the snippet on search results.
  5. Adult content: enable only if necessary.
  6. HTTPS redirect: default-on in 2026. Confirm it’s enabled.

Comment Settings

  • Who can comment? Start with “Registered Users” rather than “Anyone”.
  • Enable Moderation — manual approval keeps spam out.
  • Blogger now bakes in Google reCAPTCHA, no manual toggle needed.

Theme & Archive

  • Posts per page: 5-10 is a good baseline.
  • Archive layout: monthly (most common) or weekly.
  • 2026 tip: review the mobile theme — 70% of traffic comes from phones.
