Why Are Vertical Videos Important?

I’m writing this text for the second time, because I refreshed the page without saving 😀 I’m going crazy right now, but so be it — I’ll end up writing a more digested version.

This week I’ll tell you about a simple experiment of ours. As you know, we have a video podcast called “Kreatif Durak”, where we invite digital content creators from different fields who have reached a certain level, and we ask them to tell their life stories.

We take care to cut selected parts of these podcasts into reels, shorts and TikTok videos of at most 60 seconds. We especially try to share these vertical clips from our creators’ more story-like memories. And these clips usually get between 200,000 and 3,000,000 views for now, with Instagram leading.

So we tried to test this differently. If there were no podcast at all, if the person telling the story to the camera weren’t famous, and if there were no brand like “Konuşanlar” hosted by HasanCan — could we still get views from this kind of content?

Turns out you can. I tried telling, in a 59.9-second vertical video straight to camera, a copyright story I lived through when I was 13-14 years old. But we made sure the story was a real event — an absurd situation that wouldn’t easily happen to just anyone.

As a result, me — not an influencer, with zero promotion and zero ads — got 420,000 views, 5,200 likes, 110 shares and 409 saves in 3 days, closing our experiment with a positive result.

We’ll have more experiments like this. You might say, “well, that was Kreatif Durak.” So if we tried this on our Yerini Alanlar podcast, where there are no famous names at all, would we get the same result?

We’ll see that together in the coming weeks. We may have discovered the bug of vertical videos. And we’re sharing it with you for free. We’d be delighted if you shared us with the people around you too.

Stay tuned for what’s next — now I’ll leave you with this week’s highlights..

📢 For Content Creators;

  1. Instagram increased reels video length from 60 to 90 seconds.
  2. Instagram launched the pin-3-posts feature. You can now show the content you choose as the first three posts on your profile.
  3. Interactive stickers on Instagram can now also be used in reels videos.
  4. You can now use your own external music and audio recordings in your reels. Besides the audio that comes with the video, you’ll be able to add external sound.
  5. High-quality video upload is being tested for Instagram. You’ll be able to share videos without quality loss.
  6. Twitter is testing its new shopping feature, “Product Drops”.

📉 Statistic of the Week

Let’s look together at the most visited websites from 1993 — the year I was born — until today. And let’s watch Yahoo’s fall off a cliff after 2010.

🎥 What Did We Produce?

This week we prepared a one-on-one style Yerini Alanlar episode with Enes.

In episode 10 of Yerini Alanlar’s 2nd season: the Apple credit card, the Apple WWDC22 event, Meta’s COO Sheryl Sandberg stepping down, new Instagram features, Elon Musk getting the data he asked for, 127 GB of data transferred per second! Black Adam is coming from DC, La Casa de Papel is being reshot in Korea, Stranger Things became the most watched series by hours, and Tobey Maguire is returning with the new Spider-Man.

A VIDEO

A CHANNEL

Murat Sen — “Hello young people and those who always stay young; on this channel we’ve been producing and learning together for about three years.” A channel worth checking out.

A WHATEVER

Atomic Habits — I haven’t had the chance to read this book yet, but everyone producing productivity content on Youtube is picking it up and reading it. It’s a book that speaks to popular culture, but it clearly leaves a mark on people — so why shouldn’t we read it too?
